This dataset complies with pan-European standards which are part of the INSPIRE theme ‘Geographic Grid System’ and conforms to the data specifications defined for that theme.

According to the INSPIRE data specification for the theme Geographical Grid Systems, a geographical grid system is defined as following : "Harmonised multi-resolution grid with a common point of origin and standardised location and size of grid cells". The scope of the theme covers quadrilateral grids used for the indirect geo-referencing of themes with typically coarse resolution and wide (pan-European) geographical extent. Moreover, the theme establishes two Pan-European grids to be used within continental Europe in the INSPIRE context: The Equal Area Grid and the Zoned Geographic Grid.

The European Commission has established a planar geometric grid that subdivides the territory of the European Union (EU-28 and EFTA countries) into 1 km² cells (INSPIRE, 2014). This geospatial reference grid is known as ‘Grid_ETRS89-LAEA’, as it was established on the basis of the ‘European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 – Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (ETRS89-LAEA)’ coordinate system.

This dataset contains the subset of Grid_ETRS89-LAEA covering the territory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and comprises the 2,795 grid cells that are wholly or partly located within the national territory.

The properties of this grid conform to the Equal Area Grid of the INSPIRE data specification for Geographical Grid Systems theme :

- Grid based on the ETRS89 Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (ETRS89-LAEA) coordinate reference system.
- The origin of the grid coincides with the false origin of the ETRS89-LAEA coordinate reference system (x=0, y=0).
-  Grid points of grids based on ETRS89-LAEA shall coincide with grid points of the grid. 
- Grid is hierarchical, with resolutions of 1m, 10m, 100m, 1000m, 10km and 100km. 
- Grid orientation is south-north, west-east. Each cell has a standardised code consisting of the cell size and the coordinates of the bottom-left corner.

Remark : Grid cells located along the national border may have an area of less than 1 km², as they are clipped by the buffered national boundary.
