3D Reconstruction of Stenopterygius quadriscissus (TV211) via Photogrammetry

Description

This dataset provides a 3D reconstruction of a fossil specimen from the palaeontological collection of the Musée national d'histoire naturelle Luxembourg (MNHNL). The reconstruction was created using photogrammetry, a technique that generates 3D models from overlapping 2D photographs.

Taxon: Stenopterygius quadriscissus (Quenstedt, 1856) - Ichthyosaur

Time period: Lower Toarcian, Harpoceras falciferum biozone (183 million years ago)

Collection location: Dudelange, usine Luxguard 2, Luxembourg

MNHNL collection number: TV211

The original specimen of this fossil is kept at the palaeontological collection of the Luxembourg National Museum of Natural History (MNHNL) in Luxembourg.

Comment: This version (older version can be found here) is a new scan done in January 2024 using 313 images shot using crosspolarised flash light to illuminate the specimen. Reconstruction was done using 3DF Zephyr.

This dataset contains:

  1. Online 3D Model: A link to an interactive, viewable version of the 3D model hosted on Sketchfab.
  2. Original Photogrammetry Images: The complete set of high-resolution photographs used to create the 3D reconstruction.
  3. 3D Model Files: Multiple resolutions of the 3D model in .obj format, including corresponding texture files as raster images. These files can be viewed and processed offline using MeshLab.
